Install openSUSE Leap 15.2 on DELL XPS m1730

 Finally found time to update to Leap 15.2. Remaining problem is Nouveau modesetting which is easily to fix with nouveau.modeset=0 cmdline addition.

 

openSUSE Tumbleweed on HP Proliant ML530 G2

HP Proliant ML530 G2 is pretty old device these days and to install modern linux on it require some tricks.

• System CPU's is not x86_64 compatible, so go for i586 distro, openSUSE Tumbleweed i586
• To fix HP Smart Array 6400 driver, add to installer kernel cmdline: cciss.cciss_allow_hpsa=0
• To fix kernel hang with video with ATI Rage in installer, add to installer kernel cmdline:  nomodeset
•  To fix video ATI Rage in system installer, add to installer kernel cmdline: console=ttyS0 console=tty textmode=1
• To fix video with ATI Rage in GRUB, after installation is finished mount root with chroot:

mount -o bind /proc /tmp/chroot/proc
mount -o bind /sys /tmp/chroot/sys
mount -o bind /dev /tmp/chroot/dev
chroot /tmp/chroot /bin/bash

• Edit GRUB2 config /etc/default/grub:

 GRUB_TERMINAL="console"

• Rebuild grub config and reboot.

Now you can boot into installed system fine 8)

Use Dualshock3 joystick on PC

Just encountered need to play game on PC with Dualshock3 joystick and found it is not working out of the box and require userspace tools:

For Linux there is userspace tool xboxdrv
For Win32  it requires Xbox joysticks driver package and this userspace tool SCP

Install openSUSE 13.2 on DELL XPS m1730

Default modesetting driver in openSUSE installation detect something wrong with DELL XPS m1730, screen goes white on first graphic switch from text mode, to fix this disable kernel modesetting with cmdline option nomodeset or choose No KMS driver if installing with dvd/usb.

openSUSE grub2 boot cd image iso of bios update

Add custom entry to /etc/grub.d/40_custom file:

for gpt partition table root disk and root partition is second.
/boot/memdisk is copy of /usr/share/syslinux/memdisk part of syslinux package.

Then create new boot record:

$ sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg


Reboot now and choose new grub2 entry Bios upgrade.

systemd initrd-switch-root with openSUSE 13.2

Somehow my cmdline cotained init=linuxrc from some old openSUSE versions and with new system upgrade to 13.2 version after reboot boot stoped in single user mode with initrd-switch-root service fail to find init name linuxrc. Once this init= var removed from cmdline system boots fine.

Use adb with Nokia X2 under Linux

By default adb doesnt detect Nokia X2 usb debugging device. For some reason it require additional step, add 0x0421 to ~/.android/adb_usb.ini file.
